Video gait analysis only tells half the story at best. I am receiving on a daily basis Google alerts on gait analysis. The majority have been shoe stores marketing a video analysis in helping you choose a shoe that is best for your foot type. Undoubtedly, observation is key. I can tell you, however, as a podiatrist well versed in gait analysis, the eyes alone are not adequate. Since our office has been using the Optogait video and computerized gait analysis system I can not relate how amazed we are to see the amount of asymmetry that is identified with the computerized portion of the program that in no way we were identifying with the naked eye. The Optogait has enhanced our ability to determine the efficacy of our orthoses and bracing. We are currently working on a scientific paper evaluating barefoot vs shoe running with objective data. You can check out the you tube video below which shows an athlete using an old pair of shoes and compare it to the linked video with the athlete in a new pair of shoes. You can not determine that he is asymmetrical by 12% with the old shoes and only by <2% in new shoes by observation. The optogait is changing how we "look" at how people walk. Very exciting.
I've been receiving daily google alerts on gait analysis with regards to video evaluation of walking. Many shoe stores now offer video analyis to determine what shoe is the best fit for you. Like most of the chain store's hocus pocus in choosing a "custom" insole for your feet, most of the information gathered is not truly objective. It is, however, a very good marketing tool. If you truly want to analyze how you walk or evaluate which shoe is best for you, you need to have objective data obtained by a computer and not the naked eye. The Optogait gait analysis system provides objective data that video alone can not evaluate. Compare old and new sneaker vidoes @ you tube link and you will be unable to see a 12% difference in symmetry that was found with the Optogait but can not be discerned by video alone.

Therefore, if you truly want an accurate, reproducible gait analyis you need to have not only video but computerized analysis. www.incedoorthopedics.com
